Article 04 - The Role of Social Media in Employer Branding
Organizations are using social
media platforms as a powerful tool to display their company culture, values,
and mission to potential employees and their followers. Promoting an employer
brand on social media is more than just advertising job openings; it has
changed the way companies communicate with their audience through authentic and
meaningful content that resonates to attract top talent and retain valuable
employee resources.
Nowadays, organizations reach a
global audience through social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, X (earlier Twitter), Facebook, and TikTok and support
them to attract diverse talent pools. To keep the employer brand on top of candidates'
and followers' minds, companies can share meaningful real-time content about
workplace culture and employee achievements. (Writer, 2019) Employees also share
authentic stories and experiences on social media, reflecting that they are brand
ambassadors. This helps to strengthen the employer brand naturally, develops trust among the audience and followers, and increases engagement. (Universumglobal.com, 2024)
Why Social Media Matters for Employer Branding
Organizations leverage social media to provide outsiders
with an indication into their platforms, processes, top talents, achievements,
and ongoing projects. Today's candidates don’t just look at job descriptions; they
research the organization's brand’s social presence, checking the values align
with their own.(Tewari, 2015) indicates that social media can be a powerful
tool for building and maintaining a positive employer brand, especially among
younger demographics and potential job seekers. Companies communicate with
their audience in various ways due to the presence of social media platforms.
It has made it easier for companies to showcase their culture, values, and
mission and interact with their audience. (HR Lineup, 2023)
Social media is a powerful tool for Employer Branding:
- Real-Time Engagement: Social media allows a company to interact with potential candidates for job opportunities, and it also provides a two-way communication opportunity.
- Global Reach with Personalization: Compared to traditional job advertising, digital media enables employers to reach diverse audiences and tailor their content to meet the expectations of each demographic.
- Creative Storytelling: No need to tell everything in words! Videos, images, employee references, and stories will provide a more comprehensive picture of your organization.
Social media platforms
Instagram
This platform can
be used to share behind-the-scenes company culture, staff highlights, and
corporate social responsibility, which helps increase Instagram followers for
employer branding. To attract new followers and increase follower engagement,
the digital marketing teams can use interactive materials like polls, quizzes,
and live sessions. Additionally, utilizing hashtags and collaborating with
influencers or industry partners can enhance the number of followers. Maintain
a consistent publishing schedule and utilize Instagram’s Stories, Reels, and
IGTV to effectively engage your audience. These strategies boost your Instagram
employer branding and follower growth.

Netflix has
successfully used social media to establish a strong employer brand by
authentically showcasing its company culture. Through its dedicated @NetflixJobs
Instagram and LinkedIn pages, the company shares behind-the-scenes content,
employee testimonials, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
One of Netflix's
most impactful campaigns was its "WeAreNetflix" series, where
employees share their experiences through short videos and blog posts. This
initiative humanizes the brand and provides job seekers with insight into life
at Netflix. The company also actively engages with users on social media,
responding to comments and encouraging employees to share their personal
experiences, further enhancing its reputation as a desirable workplace. (Universumglobal.com, 2024)
